Basics
Full name: Mateo Luis Gomez
Gender: Male
Age: Eighteen
Divine Parent: Ares
Powers:
- Prowess in battle.
As a child of Ares, Matt has inherited enhanced strength, swiftness and combat skills which are certainly useful when it comes to battle or sparring.
- Enhanced weapon use.
Needing no introduction to the weapon beforehand, Matt is a natural to any weapon handed to him. Though he may be a natural, however, his skills still required perfection, which is his continuous aim.
- Enhanced strategic skills.
Though in part this is because Matt is generally an intelligent person, he has also inherited the ability of expertise in war strategies. Meaning he puts a hell of a lot of thought into tactics and strategies in the hopes of winning whatever he is put into.
Personality
General personality:
- Affable
Perhaps the best summary to give the character of Mateo Gomez is to describe him as affable, meaning he is friendly, good-natured and easy to talk to. His optimism largely takes part in this as well, and though the male generally sees the glass as half full, he has perfected the method of still acting serious whilst trying to think of the brighter side of things. For instance, should they be in a life or death situation, no matter what happens Mateo will be permanently convinced that there will always be a way out, so that no one has to die. All in all, he's a good friend to have for these reasons.
- Loyal
Another thing that makes Mateo a good friend to have is his loyalty. He's on a permanent mission to keep everyone safe and happy, which means he gets rather protective. Though he doesn't intend to upset anyone in the process of it, it can certainly happen since the male is rather oblivious when it comes to things like how people feel about him. In fact, he literally needs to be told straight on before being certain of such a thing, otherwise he won't notice it. And this itself can easily get people hurt. He's still loyal to his friends, however, and isn't the sort of person to blatantly, and knowingly, betray anyone without thinking of a way out of it for everyone.
- Natural born leader
Due to the combination of his thinking abilities and the need to keep everyone safe, Mateo is almost like a child of Zeus in that he is a natural born leader. Though it is almost like torture for him in that he has never been (and most likely never will be) a cabin leader of a sort. It isn't past him to stay on at camp as a counselor, however, after becoming the suitable age. Anyway, he likes to be in control of things because he likes to fully think things through himself. And if he's devising strategies and someone suddenly does something, it tends to frustrate him. Though Mateo being Mateo, he'll get used to it quickly and try to think of another way out of it so that no one is likely to get hurt as a result of someone's stupidity.
- Intelligent
Mateo is actually a rather intelligent character. Well, just saying that is a little bit of an understatement. Matt possesses an excellent memory, being able to recall plenty of trivial details and facts on demand. As a child, he also used to read a lot, which aids this knowledge. As a result of this, and his enhanced strategic skills, Mateo thinks a lot when it comes to thinking of tactics and circumstances. Of course, he'll always be optimistic about it and he would never boast about his intelligence or make people feel that they are any less than him, so this tends to be a generally not too well known trait of his unless you happen to go on a quest with him or are with him when he gets interested about something, which could trigger him happily saying "did you know..." and so on.
- Selfless
He always puts others and their feelings before his own, especially if he believed them to be in danger. He's willing to break his own heart in order to keep the one he loves safe, or even his friends. It it meant keeping his friends safe, he would permanently stay away from them. Though, since he knows, at the moment, that he doesn't directly impose any danger on anyone, this particular trait of his has not yet become a problem when it comes to breaking his own heart.
- Finicky
Mateo both shows and requires a great attention to detail. Again, though he tries to remain optimistic about things and tends not to bitch about other people, it does frustrate him momentarily when people ignore major problems or details that could even lead to someone's death if ignored. It's why he likes to take control, though he doesn't like to do it in an arrogant way. That is the last thing the male would ever want to be perceived as.
- Oblivious (to an extent)
When it comes to love, relationships and friendships, Mateo needs to be told straight on how someone feels about him. If he says something then he'll believe the person is on his side unless told otherwise. He won't even know if someone likes him until they physically told him how they felt. And though he'd be inclined to protect them from harm anyway, this feeling is increased upon knowing how someone feels about him or even if he feels something for them too. He tries to be kind about it all, but his obliviousness to stuff like this means that people can be easily hurt, though unintentionally.
- Not afraid to speak his mind
Well, he's sure never to sound arrogant about it, and frankly, he is optimistic about his ways of doing it, but Mateo is never afraid to speak his mind. Though he doesn't undermine people. He isn't bothered by people with tough exteriors, and will be just as affable around them as he would be around anyone else, even if his efforts were in vain. It's only when it's someone threatening either his or his friends' lives that he would be a little less kind and a bit more assertive with what he said.Likes: Friendly relationships; adventures; strategics; reading; challenges (mental and physical); people; when things work out well; seeing people happy; seeing people safe; keeping people safe; learning; pets (particularly dogs, he's a dog person);
Dislikes: Being patronized; having either him or his friends in danger; the idea of death; the idea of injury; things that are way too easy; being perceived as arrogant; not having control of things;
Goals: To one day become a counselor at camp, so he can be a leader of a sort. And to keep everyone safe.
Fears: That he's going to hurt someone emotionally or physically, though unintentionally (he knows he does it, it's a bit of a habit).
History
Claimed?: Yes.
Camp experience:
Mortal parent: Sofia Camila Jones (born Gomez)
Other relatives: Sebastian Jones [step father]
History: Sofia Gomez had always been something of a war buff. The girl had majored in military history and had not long been out of college when she met Ares, though she certainly didn't know it was him. She had always been keen on it and could go on for hours about what happened in what battle and so on, and when she went out for a drink with some friends, she started talking about the interesting things to have happened in wars. Of course, her friends weren't interested, and when they wandered off elsewhere, a man approached her with a look of interest upon his face and asked her to say more. For hours she spoke to him about the interesting things to have happened in war and he responded with more interesting facts and well, by the end of the night the two really hit it off. They started flirting with each other and they were certainly attracted to each other. So much so that the two of them ended up in bed with each other, and after the next morning, she actually never saw him again. Which was a major disappointment. Since she had thought she'd finally found someone who shared her interests, and clearly this was in vain.
It was only about five months into her pregnancy that she realized what had happened. At first she had thought she had just believed she was gaining weight, though it had gotten to a point when she finally went to the doctors about it and discovered she was with child. As a result, her parents disowned her for having done such a thing outside of marriage and not wanting to get rid of the baby - they were particularly traditional in their ways of doing things. By then, Sofia had already bought her own home, though small, and was on a good amount of pay. At least, well, it was enough to support a mother and child on. Just about enough.
When the baby was born, Sofia named the boy Mateo Luis Gomez, respecting her Mexican heritage in doing so. In fact, she had named the boy after her grandfather, who had been the only person in her family to fully support what she wanted to study. Despite the long name, during the raising of her child, she often just referred to him as "Matt", since a lot of people tended to find it easier to pronounce. Not that Mateo was that difficult anyway.
Matt received a pretty average childhood, though when Sofia married, Sebastian Jones, Matt's new step-father, actively encouraged intellectual pursuits for the boy from a young age. Which actually seemed to be working. The two of them did mental challenges (such as puzzles and games) together, and often discussed strategies in games like chess. To which his mother often joined in thinking of military tactics that succeeded. As a result, Matt's head was often stuck in either a puzzle book or non-fiction books when he was home, and ended up as one of the top of his class at school. He had an excellent memory and was able to recall what he had read to a great detail. Though when at school, he was never arrogant about it, and he never boasted. Matt knew of his intellectual abilities, but he never felt the need to make people feel small. So all in all, Matt had been raised in a happy home, he had been cared for and encouraged and really, he enjoyed his childhood.
The boy, at the age of thirteen, was actually on his way home from school when he was claimed. It was incredible timing because nearby, there was a boy not too much younger than Matt himself who was also a demigod being escorted by a satyr, and the two of them saw his being claimed. To which the satyr quickly pulled him to the side and asked if Matt knew about a place called "Camp Half Blood" because apparently he was a son of "Ares", who was a Greek god of war. (Of course Matt had already read up on it). The satyr insisted that Mateo go with them to this camp, though Matt argued that he had to say goodbye to his parents first (since the satyr had told him of the monsters, and the last thing he wanted to do was attract the monsters to his parents by his being there and putting them in danger). The satyr allowed him and before long, the three of them went on their way to this Camp.
On the journey, Matt actually bonded with the other demigod, who he already started to feel something of a protective instinct over. And when they got to camp, the two of them kept in contact and ended up possessing a sort of brotherly relationship.
Matt continued to read up on things whilst at camp, and enjoyed the challenges of training. Thus, the boy seriously enjoyed camp and the people he met there, believing it to be a great experience for him.
