It was completely stifling inside the Big House on a hot summer day like today. Through the window on the opposite of the room from where Clara was sitting, she could see the bright blue sky without a cloud in sight. Grasshoppers were creaking loudly in the heat and birds were singing loudly as the chased each other through the sky. All things considered it was a beautiful day outside which of course meant that Clara had to be stuck inside a musty old house for the majority of it. The wonderful day outside was practically mocking her. The Big House was unpleasant to be in on the best of days but on a day such as today it was unbearable. The old wood planks trapped in heat leaving the air inside the house feeling hot and humid. The house also trapped in all manners of dust, since most demigods had better things to do than dust. It made for a pretty image at least, the dust glowing like fireflies in the rays of sun that filtered through the window. The windows themselves were made of dirty panes of glass that were smeared with grime and what Clara swore looked like congealed blood. The windows all over the house were open in the vain hope of a draft of wind would pass by. For the past two hours Clara hadn’t felt so much as a breeze.
Thankfully some wonderful person had had the foresight to set up several fans in the recreation room where all the cabin leaders were meeting. The cabin leaders just so happened to include Clara as leader of the Demeter cabin. Like most of the demigods around the table, Clara was seconds away from melting into a puddle from the heat. Some faint notion of responsibility was the only thing keeping her from leaving the house and making straight for the lake. Although the thought was so, so tempting.
Shifting her weight in the groaning, old chair yet another time, Clara sighed quietly to herself and fought to keep her eyes trained on the cabin leader who was speaking. The leader of the Hephaestus sitting next to her shot a half-hearted glare in her direction at the sound of the chair but quickly resumed his face of boredom. All of the cabin leaders were just about dead on their feet and itching to leave the stuff Big House for some fresh air but this meeting was important. It was an update on the increase in monster activity since the Golden Fleece was stolen. Things were quickly deteriorating in camp. From the campers morale to their compromised sense of safety; ever camper could feel the tension in the air, like the calm before the storm.
Clara grimaced to herself just thinking of the situation. Everyone was on edge and just about ready to snap leaving the cabin leaders scrambling to keep everything in order. If it wasn’t so hot in here, they might get something done but as of right now the meeting most comprised of all the cabin leaders complaining or speculating what to do next.
The daughter of Demeter gritted her teeth as some of the cabin leaders broke into yet another squabble over some issue or another. Turning her angry gaze to the leader of the Zeus cabin Clara shook her head violently in his direction before jerking her head in the direction of the door. Thankfully they got the message and quickly dispersed the meeting. It didn’t take long for most of the cabin leaders to bolt for the door with enthusiasm they had not shown the entire meeting. Clara smiled doggedly at their antics and put a hand comfortingly on the leader of the Zeus cabin’s shoulder and squeezing gently. The two demigods nodded at each other before departing after the rest of the cabin leaders.
Clara halted at the porch at the front door and took a deep breath of fresh air. It smelt refreshing after several hours of being bent over a ping pong table and getting virtually nothing done. She rested her forearms on the railings on the porch and breathed deeply several times in an attempt to wash away her tiredness. It wasn’t so much as feeling tired as feeling exhausted, weary. The monster attacks were weight heavily on everyone’s minds, especially the young ones. The amount of children who had crawled into her bed complaining of nightmares in the last week was more than she had had all last summer. This was getting ridiculous. If the camp didn’t do something soon, it wasn’t the monsters that were going to destroy them. They were going to destroy each other.
